12 Songs You Didn’t Know Julia Michaels Co-Wrote

You may recognize Julia Michaels from her breakout single “Issues,” which peaked at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100, or the rock-tinged “Uh Huh,” another track included on her 2017 debut “mini-album” Nervous System. But chances are, you’ve been listening to the 26-year-old’s catchy, emotive, and often tongue-in-cheek lyricism for longer than you think.

Michaels began her music career as a songwriter, penning hits for the likes of Fifth Harmony, Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. And her co-writing catalog spans a range of diverse artists and genres, from pop radio material to rugged acoustic sounds and rock.

Billboard has rounded up 12 songs you probably didn’t realize are co-written by Michaels.

1. Selena Gomez – “Bad Liar”

Michaels contributed her writing chops to Gomez’s chart-climbing “Bad Liar,” a minimal, Talking Heads-lifting track in the vein of her own single “Issues.” It wouldn’t be the first time they’d join forces in the studio — Michaels co-wrote six songs off Gomez’s Revival, including “Good For You” and “Hands To Myself,” alongside songwriting veteran Justin Tranter, as well as three cuts on Gomez’s 2020 album Rare, but more on that later.

2. Justin Bieber – “Sorry”

Yep, if you’ve ever jammed out to Bieber’s absurdly catchy Purpose smash hit “Sorry,” Michaels is the one to thank. “We thought the chances of getting on Justin’s album were so slim but we were just like ‘F–k it, let’s do it,'” writes Michaels in the track’s official annotated lyrics on Genius. “We were just trying to capture that moment in a relationship, or a particular moment in your life, where you realize you made a mistake and you’re finally ready to admit it and apologize.” It worked — “Sorry” is one of Michaels’ most successful songwriting credits to date, notching 42 weeks on the Hot 100 and peaking at No. 1.

3. Ed Sheeran – “Dive”

Michaels joined Benny Blanco to pen this rugged, guitar-led track off Ed Sheeran‘s Divide album, and her influence is clear in the track’s vulnerable, witty lyricism, as Sheeran croons about an indecisive lover.

4. Linkin Park – “Heavy”

On the rock front, Michaels had a hand in Linkin Park‘s “Heavy,” released prior to frontman Chester Bennington‘s shocking suicide in July 2017. The Kiiara-featuring track, released in February 2017, reached No. 2 on the Hot Rock Songs chart. But Michaels told Billboard she has a “hard time listening” to the track after Bennington’s passing. “He came in and was really funny and really warm, and had the biggest smile on his face,” Michaels recalled of working on “Heavy” with the cherished singer-songwriter. “He was just cracking jokes and having the best time.”

5. Gwen Stefani – “Used To Love You”

Michaels played a major role in Gwen Stefani‘s third studio album, This Is What the Truth Feels Like, co-writing a whopping 10 of the album’s 12 total songs. Among them was the album’s first official single, the emotional break-up track “Used To Love You,” which Michaels told Genius she put together after scanning Stefani’s diary for inspiration. Michaels also wrote the pop gem “Misery” for the album which, despite its title, is a bright, bubbly jam that muses on the beginnings of new love.

6. Fifth Harmony – “Miss Movin’ On”

Fifth Harmony’s debut single? Yep, Michaels’ fingerprints are all over that, too. The track, which Michaels wrote in collaboration with longtime songwriting partner Lindy Robbins, broke the Billboard Hot 100 and brought listeners some characteristically cheeky Michaels lyrics (“shake it off like an etch-a-sketch” being one). In 2016, Michaels also helped pen the group’s Fetty Wap-featuring track “All In My Head.”

7. Britney Spears feat. Tinashe – “Slumber Party”

Writing lyrics for an artist as iconic as Britney Spears is likely a bucket list item for any songwriter. Michaels checked it off with “Slumber Party,” a track she co-wrote for Spears and R&B singer-songwriter Tinashe, who is featured on the track. Released as a single off Spears’ ninth studio album Glory in 2016, the track peaked at No. 1 on the Dance Club Songs charts.

8. Kelly Clarkson – “War Paint”

Back in 2015, Michaels linked up with Kelly Clarkson to co-write her Piece By Piece track “War Paint.” And while a country-pop star might seem to stick out among the other artists in Michaels’ catalog, the track about opening up to a significant other has all the depth and pop charm of a Michaels song –– “Face to face, but miles away / Building trenches out of empty spaces / Lay here, next to me / And close the distance in between,” runs the emotive first verse.

9. Nick Jonas feat. Tove Lo – “Close”

Another of Michaels’ most successful co-writes, Nick Jonas‘ deeply personal duet “Close” with Swedish singer Tove Lo notched No. 14 on the Hot 100. Michaels also offered lyrical assistance on Jonas’ “Chainsaw,” off the same album, 2016’s Last Year Was Complicated.

10. Demi Lovato – “Fire Starter”

Let’s throw it back to the 2013 Demi track “Fire Starter.” This empowering song was one of the first songs Michaels co-wrote with notable songwriter Lindy Robbins, who helped kick-star Michaels’ career by introducing her to others in the industry. Never mind that Michaels was barely 20 years old at the time.

11. Selena Gomez – “Lose You To Love Me”

By the time Gomez released her third solo studio album Rare, she and Michaels were good friends — and frequent collaborators. Michaels boasts three co-writing credits on the Billboard 200-topping album: for “Fun,” “Look at Her Now” and the single “Lose You to Love Me” — which just so happened to become Gomez’s first Hot 100 No. 1!

12. Dua Lipa – “Pretty Please”

Once again, Michaels was recruited by a pop superstar to contribute her expertise. Co-written with Dua Lipa, Caroline Ailin and Ian Kirkpatrick, “Pretty Please” appears on Lipa’s almost universally-beloved second studio album Future Nostalgia.

12 Refugee Facts in the Philippines

  1. A refugee is a person escaping his or her country because of the forced effects of persecution, war, or natural disaster.
  2. The year 2000 was the year that the United Nations declared 20 June at the celebration for World Refugee Day.
  3. The first wave of refugees that came to the Philippines was the so-called "White Russians" of which 800 was a part of a fleet of almost 8,000 refugees that fled the persecution from the "Red Russians" or those who supported the 1917 Socialist Revolution. 250 worked in abaca plantations which were then a booming industry in Mindanao.
  4. The second wave of refugees were the 1,200 European Jews that escaped the World War II Nazi persecution. These refugees were accepted by former President Manuel L. Quezon by issuing the Proclamation No. 173 on 21 August 1937 which later became the basis of Commonwealth Act 613 now known as Philippine Immigration Act of 1940. By this act, a Filipino can see Quezon monument in Tel Aviv, Israel, inscribed with his words of welcome for refugees, that: “the people of the Philippines will have in the future every reason to be glad that when the time of need came, their country was willing to extend a hand of welcome.”
  5. The third wave of refugees to the Philippines was the Spanish Republicans who fled the Falange Española of General Francisco Franco from 1936 to 1939. It was due to the absolute neutrality being implemented by President Quezon during those time of the Spanish Civil War that these refugees were accepted in the Philippines.
  6. The fourth wave of refugees was the Chinese immigrants that came because of the Chinese Civil War. It was in 1940 that the Philippine Immigration Act of 1940 was enacted and 30,000 Kuomintang Chinese group were welcomed. It was also the time the Philippines became a sovereign country and the foreigners were allowed to become naturalized Filipinos as stated in the Philippine Constitution.
  7. The fifth wave of refugees was the second wave of White Russians, 6,000 of which were welcomed by former President Elpidio Quirino in 1948. These Russians left their community in Shanghai, China due to the impending communist forces and only the Philippines replied to their request for refugee status. This was also the time that the Displaced Persons Act of 1948 was amended.
  8. The sixth wave of refugees to the Philippines came during the years of 1975 to 1992 wherein 2,700 Vietnamese "boat people" escaped the fallen South Vietnam Government and was allowed to stay in the country.
  9. The seventh wave of refugees that arrived in the Philippines were Iranian refugees in the latter part of the 1970s during the Iranian Revolution.
  10. The eighth wave of refugees came in 1980 to the Philippines which were made up of Indo-Chinese refugees including citizens from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam. It was during this time that the Philippine Refugee Processing Center in Morong, Bataan was opened to accommodate and facilitate around 400,000 refugees from 1980 to 1994.
  11. The ninth wave of refugees was East Timorese during the time that the Timor was struggling for independence from Indonesia in 2000. Former President Joseph Estrada supported this action and was able to raise local funds to support these refugees.
  12. In November 2016, due to the crisis in Syria, President Duterte announced that he is welcoming Syrian refugees to the Philippines.

12 Things About Abdul Sattar Edhi

  1. Abdul Sattar Edhi founded the world's largest volunteer ambulance network in Pakistan, the Edhi Foundation.
  2. Unlike wealthy individuals that fund charities in their names, Edhi dedicated his life to the poor from the age of 20, when he himself was penniless in Karachi.
  3. Edhi was born before partition in Bantva, Gujarat, India on February 28, 1928.
  4. He is also well-known for the aphorism: “People have become educated... but have yet to become human.”
  5. Edhi was born into Islam but never allowed faith to interfere in his humanitarian endeavors. Once asked why he helped non-Muslims, he answered simply: “Because my ambulance is more Muslim than you.”
  6. In light of the new US President’s “Muslim travel ban”, it is worth remembering another of Edhi’s remarks, after being detained and interrogated by immigration officials at New York’s John F. Kennedy airport in January 2008 under Bush administration terror laws. Questioned by reporters as to the reason for his detention, the philanthropist wryly offered: “The only explanation I can think of is my beard and my dress.”
  7. Abdul Sattar Edhi died of kidney failure, leaving behind his wife of 52 years, Bilquis, a former nurse, and four offspring. By the time of his death on July 8th 2016,  Edhi was registered as a parent or guardian of nearly 20,000 children.
  8. The Edhi Foundation's slogan is: "Live and help live".
  9. With more than 1,800 ambulances stationed across Pakistan, the Edhi Foundation is Pakistan's largest welfare organization.
  10. In 1997, the foundation entered the Guinness World Records as the "largest volunteer ambulance organization" (operating 1,500 vehicles) and Edhi ambulances are welcomed as friendly neighbors throughout Pakistan. If you call 115 in the South Asian nation, the Edhi Foundation will answer.
  11. After the nominations in 2014, the hashtag  #NobelPrizeforEdhi was created; many said he should have been recognized instead of Malala Yousafzai, who is also from Pakistan. In an interview with the Express Tribune newspaper, Edhi said: "I don't care about it. The Nobel Prize doesn't mean anything to me. I want these people, I want humanity."
  12. It was announced that the State Bank of Pakistan would issue a commemorative coin of 50 rupees (38p) in memory of Edhi as a small token of appreciation for his selfless services for the country.

    12 Things About High Heels

    1. Research shows that high heels can be traced back to ancient Egypt. In the middle of the second millennium BC, Egyptians began to frequently use sandals. Retention was obtained generally by the Egyptians by a T or V thong passing through the sole. Egyptian butchers also wore heeled shoes for practical purposes, that is, in order to keep their feet clean of any blood while slaughtering animals.
    2. Things started to change when during the European renaissance, the high heel became a status symbol worn by both male and females from the higher social statuses.
    3. Catherine de Medici a Franco/Italian noblewomen pioneered the use of heels as a fashion statement. Catherine de Medici is believed to have worn them to impress the French court when she wed the Duke of Orleans, the future king. It is believed to be the first instance when heels were worn however, this reference may be apocryphal, as the development of heels did not begin to come about until the late 1580s, based on iconographic evidence and extant pieces. Two hundred years later King Louis XIV of France decreed that only nobility could wear heels, and that only members of his specific court could wear red ones. Seventeenth-century portraits of King Louis XIV depict the various intricate heels worn by the king and they were often decorated with miniature battle scenes.
    4. In terms of design, high heels can be seen with plain construction or with embellishment. Depending on the design concept, embellishment materials include leather, wood, metal chain, plastic appliqués, lace, and others. The majority of embellishments are for aesthetic purposes. The rest are for functional support.
    5. High heels have caused significant controversy in the medical field lately, with many podiatrists seeing patients whose severe foot problems have been caused almost exclusively by high-heel wear.
    6. Cuban heels were first widely popularized by Beatle boots (variant of the Chelsea boot), as worn by the English rock group the Beatles during their introduction to the United States.
    7. Mongolian horsemen were among the first to use heels as means to keep their feet from sliding out of their stirrups. Actors playing tragic roles in ancient Greek drama wore the buskin, a boot with a platform sole, designed to give them greater height over other actors.
    8. American cowboy boots, first developed in the 19th century and still popular today in some parts of the United States, have high underslung heels to keep a rider's foot from sliding through the stirrup. High-heeled platform shoes were a widely popular form of men's footwear during the 1970s.
    9. High-heeled shoes slant the foot forward and down while bending the toes up. The more the feet are forced into this position, the more it may cause the gastrocnemius muscle (part of the calf muscle) to shorten. This may cause problems when the wearer chooses lower heels or flat-soled shoes. When the foot slants forward, a much greater weight is transferred to the ball of the foot and the toes, increasing the likelihood of damage to the underlying soft tissue that supports the foot. In many shoes, style dictates function, either compressing the toes or forcing them together, possibly resulting in blisters, corns, hammer toes, bunions (hallux valgus), Morton's neuroma, plantar fasciitis and many other medical conditions, most of which are permanent and require surgery to alleviate the pain.
    10. Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III signed the department order on Friday, 25 August 2017, following a call from a labor union against the dress code that puts at risk the occupational safety of working women.
    11. Philippines is the first country in Asia to ban the mandatory wearing of high heels in the workplace.
    12. Types of heels found on high-heeled footwear include:
      1. Cone - A round heel that is broad where it meets the sole of the shoe and noticeably narrower at the point of contact with the ground. It is closed on the front back and sides.
      2. Kitten - A short, slim heel with maximum height under 2 inches (5 cm) and diameter of no more than 0.4 inch (1 cm) at the point of contact with the ground.
      3. Prism - Three flat sides that form a triangle at the point of contact with the ground.
      4. Puppy - Thick square block heel with approximately 2 inches (5 cm) length in all dimensions.
      5. Spool or Louis - Broad where it meets the sole and at the point of contact with the ground; noticeably narrower at the midpoint between the two.
      6. Stiletto - A tall, slim heel with minimum height of 2 inches (5 cm) and diameter of no more than 0.4 inch (1 cm) at the point of contact with the ground.
      7. Wedge - Occupies the entire space under the arch and heel portions of the foot.
      8. Viennese - The heel is longer than the shoe itself and is impossible to walk on, only found on fetish shoes, just for sitting or lying down.

    12 Things About Uber

    1. Uber Technologies Inc. is an American technology company headquartered in San Francisco, California, United States, operating in 633 cities worldwide.
    2. It develops, markets and operates the Uber car transportation and food delivery mobile apps.
    3. Uber drivers use their own cars, although drivers can rent a car to drive with Uber.
    4. The name "Uber" is a reference to the common (and somewhat slangy) word "uber", meaning "topmost" or "super", and having its origins in the German word über, meaning "above".
    5. Uber has been a pioneer in the sharing economy and the changes in industries as a result of the sharing economy have been referred to as "Uberification" or "Uberisation".
    6. Uber fares are based on a dynamic pricing model, in which fares are higher during periods of high demand for rides.
    7. In February 2010, Ryan Graves became the first Uber employee, getting the job by responding to a tweet from Kalanick announcing the job opening, and receiving 5-10% of the company. Graves started out as general manager and shortly after the launch was named as CEO.[72] After ten months Kalanick succeeded Graves as CEO in December 2010.[68][69][73][74] Graves stepped down to become the company's COO.
    8. In 2011, the company changed its name from UberCab to Uber.
    9. Uber was founded in 2009 as UberCab by Garrett Camp, the cofounder of StumbleUpon, and Travis Kalanick, who had sold his Red Swoosh startup for $19 million in 2007.
    10. On September 14, 2016, Uber launched its first self-driving car services to select customers in Pittsburgh, including Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto using a fleet of Ford Fusion cars each equipped with 20 cameras, seven lasers, GPS, lidar and radar equipment that enables the car to create a three-dimensional map utilizing landmarks and other contextual information to keep track of its position.
    11. The Philippine government meted Uber a one-month suspension on August 14 following a tussle over driver permits, sparking public outrage as some 66,000 vehicles were forced off the streets.
    12. But late Friday, August 25 the government's transport agency said it would lift the ban following an Uber appeal. It ordered the US firm to pay a fine of P190 million ($3.7 million) and give its drivers financial aid for lost earnings.

12 Ways to Improve your Public Speaking

    1. Prepare. Prepare. Prepare.

Keep in mind that fear of speaking in public is an almost universal condition. One of the most effective ways to overcome the nervousness that every new public speaker experiences is careful preparation. Don’t try to talk off the top of your head—it won’t work. Always limit your talks to material you are thoroughly familiar with and organize your material carefully. That will boost your confidence and help overcome your nervousness.

    2. Always have a point

Every successful speech has a point. When you are planning your talk, ask yourself what is the major point you want to make to your audience. If you can’t summarize the point of your talk in two or three sentences you run the risk of rambling—a sure turnoff for every audience.

Then, concentrate solely on the point you want to make and not on your own anxieties.

    3. Use a “narrative hook”

Successful magazine and book writers use a technique known as the narrative hook. That’s a literary technique used in the very first paragraph of a story that “hooks” the reader’s attention so that they will keep reading. The technique works equally well in the opening of a public presentation. An opening that hooks the audience into wanting to know what is coming next is a surefire way to get their attention. Your hook might be a challenging question to the audience, a dramatic, controversial, or unexpected statement—anything that will capture the audience’s attention. Whatever you use, make sure it is directly related to the point of your presentation.

    4. Get comfortable with your surroundings

Professional speakers know the importance of arriving early to size up the room and the speaker’s lectern. Don’t be hesitant to make your needs known in advance. If you arrive expecting a lapel microphone and you find a fixed or handheld mike, it may be too late to change.

    5. Greet as many members of the audience as you can before your talk

Learn as much as possible about them. It’s easier and more comfortable to talk with a group of acquaintances than with strangers. One well-known speaker says she likes to mentally picture her audience as her “guests.”

    6. Make eye contact

Look audience members in the eye, but not more than five or six seconds each. Eye contact longer than that will make some individuals uncomfortable. Avoid focusing your gaze on a single person or spot in the room; that’s a definite no-no.

    7. Humor is OK, but be careful

Most people enjoy a good joke or a humorous anecdote, but not everyone can pull off an attempt at humor—and a joke that falls flat is a sure way to detract from your talk.

Will Rogers and Mark Twain were well known for successfully lacing their talks with humor, but unless you’re confident in your ability to make people laugh, it would be best to lay off the jokes. And, of course, using off-color humor is treading on dangerous ground.

Experts agree: the best form of humor is self-deprecating humor. Making fun of yourself is a sure way of connecting with an audience.

If you’re not comfortable using humor in your presentation, try telling a story. Everyone loves a good story, and if you can tell a story that in some way relates to the point of your presentation, you’ll be helping to put your audience in a receptive mood.

    8. Stay aware of your body language

Your body language will give your audience a constant stream of information about what’s in your mind. If you’re overly nervous, if you don’t believe in what you’re saying, or if you aren’t familiar with your material, your body language will give you away.

While it may be necessary to use a lectern to hold your notes, try to get away from behind it as much as possible. A lectern provides an obvious barrier between you and your audience and can give the impression that you’re trying to “hide” from them. Instead of standing behind a lectern during your entire presentation, engage your audience by walking around, making eye contact and appropriate gestures to emphasize a point, and, most important of all, smile. Picture in your mind the most impressive speaker that you’ve heard and there’s a good chance you’ll remember him or her doing all those things.

Always pay attention to your body language. Stand up straight, don’t use gestures that are unnatural to you, make appropriate eye contact, and smile. Anything you do to make yourself appear relaxed will help you be relaxed.

    9. Use your natural voice

Many people who are engaging conversationalists depart entirely from their natural voice when they stand up to speak in public. One way to minimize nervousness is to concentrate on avoiding departure from your normal tone of voice. In particular, avoid the dreaded monotone. To some people, a monotone voice is akin to scratching a fingernail across a chalkboard.

You can void a monotone by varying your pace and volume. Sometimes you should emphasize a point by increasing your volume, but successful speakers know that lowering your voice almost to a whisper is a very effective way to keep an audience’s attention.

    10. Obey time restrictions

Perhaps one of the most common afflictions of all among public speakers is speaking too long. Talks that drag on interminably make many people resentful of the speaker. In most cases, you will be given an expected time limit for your talk; observe that limit carefully. To do otherwise risks offending your audience as well as the sponsors of your talk. You’ll make your audience happy by taking only as much time as your need to clearly make your point. Then sit down.

    11. Start strong and finish strong

Using a narrative hook is one of the best ways to start your presentation on a strong note. But remember: it’s equally important to finish strong. Old time vaudevillians used to sum up the importance of finishing strong with their saying, “always leave ’em laughing.” While you won’t necessarily want to leave your audience laughing, you do want to leave them with a strong closing worth remembering.

Think carefully about how you want to close your talk and plan it well. Keep in mind that your audience is most likely to remember your first words and your last words. In short, start strong and finish strong.

    12. Finally, as you’re speaking, remember that people want you to succeed. Audiences are on your side. They don’t want you to fail.
